Item 11 – The Nikon D-70 with 35-70 & 70-200mm lenses
SCORE 15                                                                 MSRP: >$1200

The Nikon D-70 camera with the two lenses is a wonderful DSLR camera and with one extra battery will take wonderful photos of the highest quality for a month long trip. However the camera, lenses, mini-tripod, extra battery and all important waterproof Pelican box weighs in at nearly ten pounds! There are so many high quality point and shoot cameras, some of which are even waterproof, that it is hard to justify bringing this behemoth. I think it’s time to down size.

What do you use? How do you like it?

FINAL EVALUATION:  Great but too heavy and bulky

I use a Canon G11 with the matching dive housing to keep it safe from water while paddling. The image quality is terrific, and it does great in low light situations. The housing is bulky, but will fit in a kayak day hatch. Cost is about $500 for a G12 and housing on Amazon right now (a newer model is out, but may not have a housing available yet).

I also have a Panasonic TS4 pocket waterproof. It's very convenient to use, but the image quality is only so-so. Video is quite good, though.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for sharing. I'll have to check out the G12. Stay tuned for an evaluation of the video cam I brought.
Regards,
Jack

Jack, I should have mentioned that one thing you will not get with the G series cameras is long zoom for wildlife shots. I don't know of a waterproof camera that has that these days.
